INGLESIDE TOWNHOMES

Kenwood a brief history

The Kenwood neighborhood iS a significant part of Chicago history. It is situated along the shores of Lake Michigan on the South Side of the City. Its boundaries are 43rd Street,51st Street, Cottage Grove Avenue,
and the lake. Kenwood was originally part of Hyde Park Township, which was annexed to the city of Chicago in 1889. Kenwood was once one of Chicago’s most affluent neighborhoods, and it still has some of the largest single-family homes in the city. It contains two Chicago Landmark districts, Kenwood and North Kenwood. A large part of the southern half of the community area is in the Hyde Park Kenwood Historic District. In recent years, Kenwood has received national attention as the home of former U.S. President Barack Obama. The entire district was added to the NRHP on February 14, 1979, and expanded on August 16, 1984, and May 16, 1986. The district is bounded to the north, south, east and west, respectively by 47th Street, 59th Street, Lake park Avenue and Cottage Groves Avenue. Despite the large amount of property associated with the University of Chicago, the Hyde Park—Kenwood Historic District is mostly residential. The district is considered to be significant for its architecture and education.”

Kenwood Today

“Kenwood today offers a charming blend of historic elegance, lakefront leisure, and an inviting localscene. Stroll down its tree-lined boulevards past grand mansions—once home to luminaries likeMuhammad Ali and Barack Obama—and head toward the lakeshore to enjoy Burnham Park, scenic bike trails, and the peaceful Burnham Wildlife Corridor. The neighborhood’s culinary scene includes cozy staples like Ain’t She Sweet Café for sandwiches and desserts, Zaleski & Horvath for fresh deli sandwiches, and Italian Fiesta Pizzeria for classic thin-crust pizza. Goree Cuisine is a local favorite for authentic Senegalese dishes and homemade ginger drinks. When it comes to drinks, Jimmy’s Woodlawn Tap is a beloved dive bar with cheap pitchers, live music, and a laid-back vibe, while Some Like It Black combines creative cocktails with an artsy atmosphere. Nearby Hyde Park adds even more options, like Norman’s Bistro with its American-Creole-Brazilian menu and live jazz, or Yusho for Japanese-inspired small plates and sake. Altogether, Kenwood balances quiet, historic streets with flavorful local eats, global cuisine, and relaxed bars full of neighborhood character.”
